My journey to OWM

Breaking down the "how" and the "why."

You may be asking the question, "How did I get here?" Well, let me tell you...

I went to the Passion Conference this past December. For those who don’t know, Passion is a conference for young adults that is full of great music and incredible sermons. I had the opportunity to go in December, so I did!

The whole message of the conference was to go where God was sending you. At the end, they had us write on these cards where we felt God was leading us and I wrote the country, Ghana…

Some background information: My heart has always been hardened towards doing missions in other countries. Growing up, I was a very materialistic person. The idea of going to another country for a long period of time and not being able to go buy a bunch of clothes or not being able to get my nails done or eat an expensive meal, just sounded completely out of the question. That materialism I made as a part of my identity went to go as a reason why I believed God definitely didn't have missions in His plan for me. Well, God is funny like that.

Going back to that moment in the conference when we were writing down a place… I could NOT get the country, Ghana, out of my head. Trust me, I tried really hard. I could’ve thought of anything else, like starting a Bible study at my college or becoming a mentor to some girls in my hometown… literally anything that meant I could stay in the United States.

But no, Ghana was what was in my head. A country I’ve only ever heard of in my AP Geography class with no context other than its geographical position on the map. I cannot stress this enough: I have no other explanation as to where this idea came from other than the Lord, Himself. I fought Him on it too and only surrendered to writing “Ghana” in super small handwriting on the card so no one else could see it. (Pictured to the right).

What can I say? I was skeptical. God, however, knew exactly what He was doing.

Three weeks later, when I got back to school, I was going to the cafeteria for lunch when I was met by a OneWay Ministries booth. Sometimes organizations set up booths in the lobby of the cafeteria and 99% of the time I walk right past them... because, you know, I’m hungry. But OneWay offered me a sticker, which apparently is my weakness, so I walked over to them.

They started explaining the internship they offer, which sounded super cool but I wasn't exactly sold. But on a whim, I asked them if they did any mission work. And their answer was: “Yes! We primarily do missions in Ghana!” … My jaw quite literally dropped and I asked them to repeat themselves a few more times just to be sure.

Long story short, I applied. I had to. And I got in!

That is why I can tell you, with utter assurance, that this is exactly where God wants me to be for the summer and why I am so incredibly excited to be walking in that calling. I have already learned so much, and I can't wait to tell you all about it.
